External Quality Assessment for the Pre-analytical Phase

With the total testing cycle divided into preanalytical, analytical and postanalytical phases, most errors have been suggested to occur in the preanalytical phase. These errors - such as ordering of inappropriate tests and transport delays - are often invisible yet can lead to significant divergence in test results.

These new preanalytical EQA schemes provide a unique means to assess a larger part of the total laboratory testing process and not just the commonly surveyed analytical phase. Managing all phases of the total testing cycle is equally important to ensure patient safety.

Altogether four preanalytical schemes are launched as part of the first release. In these schemes, real life scenarios are used as case studies. A questionnaire probing the preanalytical phase is filled out by the participants to learn about their way of working. The goal is to provide a comprehensive view on the appropriateness of the preanalytical phase to the participants.
