Parents should pick up their vacuum cleaners, because there is growing evidence that the ‘hygiene hypothesis’ is a myth, according to new research. The theory, first proposed in 1989, holds that lack of exposure to common allergens, caused by living in spotless homes, means children’s immune systems do not develop as they should. This could explain large rises in asthma and other allergic conditions, it contends.
