How to ensure the quality of preanalytical phase and point-of-care testing
These are the themes of Nordic Congress on Quality in Laboratory Medicine 2016. The congress will be held on 11-12 February, 2016 in Helsinki, Finland

Preanalytics
Preanalytics is currently the most interesting topic in laboratory medicine all over Europe. Should there be failures in some preanalytical steps, the consequent analysis result can be worthless. The Preanalytics session will focus on the management of the preanalytical phase and how to handle patient preparation & guidance, highlighting the importance of sampling and logistic issues. The speakers from Europe and Canada will touch the key preanalytical factors in different disciplines including biochemistry, haematology, microbiology and pathology.

UK Standards for Microbiology Investigations
This standard (SMI Q 2) describes aspects of quality assurance in the diagnostic virology and serology laboratory. It covers laboratory aspects of quality assurance, specifically the analytical phase. However, laboratories are urged to pay equal attention to ensuring that pre and post examination phases are reviewed and controlled to minimise the risk of errors occurring.
Quality must start with the selection of the appropriate analytical method and equipment. Practice should, where possible be supported by World Health organization (WHO) / National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (NIBSC) reference methods and materials. However, where there are no recommended WHO/NIBSC reference methods/materials/standards for a process, laboratories must carry out their own validation. Standardisation of methods, and thence results is key to the use of pathology data between laboratories and for wider purposes such as surveillance.

New test reduces risk and increases accuracy in prenatal testing
Research into a simple, accurate and low risk blood test that can detect fetal blood group, sex, and genetic conditions in unborn babies has been published in the international scientific journal, Clinical Chemistry.
The test developed can be carried out on mothers at risk of X-linked genetic recessive diseases including haemophilia and Duchenne muscular dystrophy and mothers at risk of haemolytic disease of the new-born. It can use the blood that is taken from the mother when she has her first appointment with her GP or midwife at the early stages of pregnancy, negating the need for multiple appointments and making best use of resources.
